Under Suzanne Scott's guidance, ACADEMIC ADVISORY SERVICE addresses
all aspects of school and college related questions.
As a member of IECA, the Independent Educational Consultants Association, almost from its inception in 1976, Suzanne subscribes to their ethical concepts. She has participated on the board and several committees to insure continuation of the high standards the association espouses. This includes her pledge to accept no remuneration from any institution where admission is involved. This promises not only professional but also objective and impartial counsel, as the student is her client and sole concern.
Below you will find information on many of the areas of service for which previous clients have sought guidance.

DAY & BOARDING SCHOOL
SELECTION
| Effective
school selection requires thorough understanding
of the individual client and knowledge of the many resources
available. Through careful consideration of past performance
and future goals, a comprehensive educational profile
of the student is developed. The individualized process
typically encompasses most of the following: extended
interviews with student and parents; review of school
records, teacher comments, testing, other relevant materials;
independent screening of the student; preparation of written
student profile; research to develop list of most suitable
schools; communication with schools prior to application;
assistance with campus visits, applications, final decision.
Follow-up with the student is continued for one year after
initiation of consultation. This thorough approach allows
AAS to direct students
to those learning environments that will best challenge
their intellect, nurture their talent, stimulate their
curiosity, provide support where necessary and best enable
them to maximize their potential. |

COLLEGE & GRADUATE SCHOOL
SEARCH
| Good
organization can do much to relieve the college "jitters",
reassure uncertain high school or transfer students and
help them maintain momentum in the college search.
Adding to information from the first appointment, and
as directed by student and family concerns, AAS
helps with all aspects of the college admission process.
An effective timetable is set up and a solid list of colleges
to consider is developed. Through ongoing discussions,
students acquire the knowledge of how to do self-assessment, prepare for and
plan test schedules, refine their field of choices, set
up campus visits and interviews, complete application
forms and required essays. Financial aid and school
curriculum are among many other topics covered according
to the specific wishes of the each client. These and other services are provided to college students applying to graduate school. |

SPECIAL
LEARNING NEEDS & TALENTS
| AAS
aquaints families of students with special needs
- the gifted, the underachiever, the learning disabled, the
emotionally or physically handicapped - with information
on those resources that would be most appropriate for
them. Frequently schools are unable to foster special talents or support learning needs. Advocacy with a student's present school can often give
faculty additional insight, as can referral for the right
tutorial support; supplemental professional evaluation
or careful planning of curriculum can benefit many. While AAS
offers short term counseling to address these and other
issues, finding a school where the student ‘gets what s/he needs, uses what s/he's got, and enjoys doing it’ is often a better option. |

TROUBLED
TEENS
| Nothing
affects a family more than the challenges of dealing with
a troubled teenager who may be failing at school, resisting therapy and other efforts at intervention. Suzanne's combined background
and experience in both education and psychology make her
eminently qualified to help families deal with these and other crises.
While many parents seek solutions through the internet, they have difficulty ascertaining how well suited these options are for their child. Suzanne's familiarity with varied settings and thorough understanding of her clients
enables her to guide them through the maze of emotional
growth programs that exist and select the one most likely
to help their child. |

SUMMER,
GAP-YEAR & POST-GRADUATE PROGRAMS
| Summer, GAP-year and post-graduate programs
offer exciting opportunities worth exploring for
many students. They
can be especially valuable for those who want to further
develop special interests or talents as well as for
others struggling in some area of school, or who
are tentative about their readiness to enter or continue
college. These options can also benefit students
seeking to improve grade point average, acquire
study skills and discipline or address mild learning
differences. Initial consultation precedes all such
recommendations to insure that families are wisely
directed. |
|
RELOCATING FAMILIES
| For
families on the move, the confusion about choosing a home
and a neighborhood can often be easier than finding the
right public or private school. Consultation can smooth
the relocation process and relieve understandable
anxiety. After becoming familiar with the family's educational
philosophy and concerns, AAS
is able to provide reliable information on the choices
available in their new community. |
|
TESTING
| Individual diagnostic assessment is available with results shared
fully and promptly. This might consist of IQ, achievement, LD, reading
diagnosis, psychological and/or aptitude and interest evaluations for career
planning. This can be particularly important when the transcript is unclear
or contradictory, does not truly reflect the student or when additional
information might be of value. |
